The professional vitality of the artists invited to join the Sculptors Guild of Michigan is evident in their varied styles and media. Ranging from abstracts to realism, these talented sculptors capture their subjects in stone, metal, wood, clay, bronze, glass, concrete, papier-mâché, etc. Many are instructors in schools and universities and are recognized in exhibitions and galleries and in private, religious and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.

Organized as the Terra Cotta Sculptors in 1952, with Svea Kline, a former instructor, as its guiding light, the name of the group was changed in 1968 to the Birmingham Sculptors Guild and again in 1986 to the Sculptors Guild of Michigan to better reflect its territorial scope. The solely female group provided an umbrella for women to prove their validity as artists to the community and to provide support and inspiration to each other. In 1977 men were encouraged to join and have since taken an active role in the Guild.

The goals of the SGM are essentially the same today as at its inception: to create and exhibit high quality sculpture; to enter into competitions; to hold workshops to improve and add new skills; to enrich the community's appreciation of sculpture; and to provide a milieu where people of like interests can encourage and interact with each other creatively.
